Here’s a bit of a taster of what’s to come…

Looking back on my beginnings with chickens, I’ve had a journey marked by trials and triumphs. Each experience, whether it brought a smile or a lesson, has been a cornerstone in my understanding of these fascinating creatures. I remember an incident that profoundly shaped my approach to chicken breeding.

In my early days, filled with enthusiasm and too much excitement, I set some eggs under a broody hen. As hatching day approached, my need to interfere led to a decision I would deeply regret. I interfered with the natural process to ‘help’ the chick hatch, like helping a butterfly emerge from its cocoon. This was a severe mistake. By disrupting the natural hatching rhythm, I inadvertently caused the demise of those poor tiny chicks. I was devastated.

This incident taught me an invaluable lesson, much like the butterfly analogy. Just as a butterfly needs to struggle out of its cocoon to develop the strength to fly, chicks need to break free from their shells in their own time. This process is crucial for them to absorb the nutrients from the yolk and allow their feathers to dry. I hindered their natural development by intervening too early, leading to their unfortunate pre-mature fate.

This heartbreaking experience was a tragic reminder of the delicate balance of nature. It taught me that sometimes the best form of care is to observe and let nature unfold in its own beautiful (but frustratingly slow) time.”
